Difficulty in sleeping is one of the most common problems that we see in children who've had extreme stress and it's because of many things.

For one thing, the child is just too anxious to fall asleep. Also, they're afraid that if they don't keep watch, if they fall asleep and let down their guard, something bad might happen and beyond that they're afraid to fall asleep because they tend to have terrible nightmares and horrible memories come back during their sleep time.
So there are lots of reasons why these children have a hard time sleeping and yet they really need sleep because it's during the phases of deep sleep that the body and the mind heal themselves. So if they're not sleeping, they're not healing. And all of our efforts are not going to be very successful if the children aren't sleeping.
So when I see a child who's having stress or anxiety or ptsd, one of the very first things that I work on is teaching them how to go to sleep. And from the very first time that we work with children, I try to teach them how to go to sleep. And it's not that hard, but it takes a little bit of training and skill.
